The Story Behind My Glory.

But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for [her] hair is given her for a covering.

Because I just made two years being natural in November, and because I have so many friends now going natural I have decided to share my journey.
My story starts out very similar to so many naturals. I had natural hair up until the 6th grade when my mom decided that it was just to much to deal with so she put a relaxer on it. I didn’t have any problems with the relaxer ,in fact I loved it. I could wear my hair DOWN…something I wasn’t able to do a lot when my hair was natural. As a natural, my mom pressed my hair…ugh…I hated getting my hair pressed, I never escaped without a burn on my scalp or my ear…PURE TORTURE, my head would be sore for days after getting my hair pressed. Can you imagine and many of you can because you went through this same process, but imagine putting Blue Magic grease on your hair then taking a hot pressing comb to your roots therefore melting the grease, and the grease running down to your scalp, causing you have third degree burns all over your head..LOL. And please don’t forget about the smell of burnt hair that stayed in your head until the next wash day, which meant you were heading for torture all over again. So again, getting a relaxer was a welcomed change. Over the years, my mom got somewhat lazy and didn’t do a great job on maintaining my new found freedom, so by the time I got to highschool I had all kind of breakage. Then by the grace of God, my aunt who is a beautician moved into town and I was able to get my hair back to a healthy state, but not without a price. I had to cut off a lot of my damaged ends but it didn’t really matter, I kept my hair , as my mother would say, “balled up” any way so no one would notice. I spent most of my teenage years walking around looking like Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez…I loved her bangs and “balled up hair..







Fast forward a few years, and I am now on my own to take care of my hair. This required me a tomboy to learn how to apply her own relaxer. This was not fun! I hated doing my own hair and at the time we couldn’t afford to send me to the shop every other week or so to keep it up so I like so many before me resorted to the old stand by..relaxer in a box. My husband and I for years applied the creamy crack to my head to give me that oh so sleek and straight look. This would continue for awhile until I finally decided enough is enough..I hated relaxers and I just wanted to get back to my roots, literally. So in October of 07 I got my last relaxer! Last relaxer

I grew my hair out or transitioned for a year. During this time, I flat ironed my hair straight until I started getting a lot of new growth, then I started wearing braids , I only did the braid thing once, I hated taking out the micros..ugh. So instead of weaves and braids, I just went to the beauty shop every two weeks and got my hair roller set, and once a month I would get a few inches of the straight hair cut off. I did this so it wouldn’t be a such a shock to my husband..LOL..going from long to short hair in one day would have messed him up Lol. I did this for a whole year and then in November 08 I cut off all the straight ends. By the way. A lot of people experience breakage during transitioning but because I went to the shop every other week and keep my hair nice and conditioned I didn’t experience a lot.

Now it has been two years since I have been completely natural. I don’t count the transitioning period as being natural, I start from the day I did the big chop. My hair has grown a lot. It is longer than it was before I transitioned. I have maintained growth due to a lot protective styling. I don’t wear my hair out a whole lot. During the week, I don’t mess with my hair a lot. I keep it twisted up and pinned up to protect my ends. I usually wear it out or in a cut style on Sundays to church or on special occasions. I will talk about my regimens and the products I use in another post.

Favorite Things (Part 1)

Here are a few of my favorite things from this year. I am listing them in no particular order:



Library- books, books, and more books. Shhhh. The quiet , the smell, the comfortable chairs, the kids section the books, books and more books..LOL. Yea, its weird and I know it, there is only one other person I know who likes books and libraries other than me (shout out to kish). I love to read , I mean I love the whole reading experience! Here are few pics of a couple of home libraries that I would love to have in my home.




Favorite Blog- The Pioneer Woman. Just take a look around this blog and you will soon see why i loove this blog. Netflix - ahhhh what a wonderful invention, I know this has been around for a long time but we have been overseas for a loooong time and didnt have access to this wonderful ammenity. PS3 finally has a purpose besides taking husband and sons hostage for hours at at time. Now I can watch old and new movies at the punch of a button. I have found my self vegged out on more than one occasion watching old 80s movies and hosting my own individual marathons with the names like , The Best of Molly Ringwald, Steel Magnolia Mondays..LOL...anyway , You get my drift...I heart Netflix!


Le Creuset Dutch Oven (Kiwi) - For as long as I have been able to cook, I have had a love affair with dishes. Pots, pans, plates, servers, you name it. I have sooo many dishes but next to my Pampered Chef Cookware this pot is on my "cant cook without" list. I have made wonderful soups, stews, neckbones, ox tails, LOL.. peas, beans, and even fried and smothered some chicken in it...oh..and I have even did a roast in it in the oven. This is such a versatile pot and I highly recommend you make this part of your kitchen collection.

Favorite Drama - For Colored Girls.I saw it twice and it was just as compelling. I didn’t know what to expect when going to see this movie, I had heard that it was a play but I had never read or saw anything about this until this movie came out. I loved it.





Favorite Comedy- Date Night...Hillarious!! This was sooooooo funny. I love both Steve Carell and Tina Fey. For all of us parents out there who look forward to date nights can certainly appreciate the spirit of this movie. The funny thing is , we went on a date night last week to Olive Garden and it was soooooo packed that we had to get a number and give the hostess our name so I said, "Tripplehorns" and she died laughing...LOL..so for the rest of the night we were known as the Tripplehorns.

Webster defines tradition as the handing down of information, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction. Christmas and Thanksgiving in many families are filled with traditions, but in our family we don’t really have any, we just sort of “wing it”. We have had brunch with friends, we have watched Christmas movies, we have gone to the movies, and we have even tried the opening one gift on Christmas eve, usually pajamas or something. I guess the one thing that we have done consistently is to cook the traditional Christmas food, which just happens to be the same thing we eat for Thanksgiving and quite frankly I get burned out on dressing, turkey, ham etc and not really looking forward to eating it all again on Christmas.
Well, this year my family and I have been discussing new traditions to start in our family that can be passed down to my grands and great grands and so on. Right now we are sort of thinking about getting a new pair of pajamas on Christmas eve and then watch movies and eat cookies ,milk, eggnog, or hot chocolate, and instead of the traditional dinner we are going to have a BIG breakfast, waffles with different toppings, eggs, bacon, sausage, orange juice etc. Then we will go to a movie on that night.

Small Beginnings

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin… (Zechariah 4: 10a)

I know this is a late post but because I was so bogged down with school and other things I just haven’t had time to blog or do much of anything else for that matter. I am taking advantage of this time off to catch up! But anywho.
On the weekend after Veterans Day our family took a trip up to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to visit the African American Military Museum. This museum is really an old USO building that was built back in 1942 in the segregated army of World War II. The USO much like the ones today was like a home away from home for many African American soldiers that were stationed at the nearby Camp Shelby. This building is the only remaining USO constructed for African American soldiers in public use in the United States. It is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is a Mississippi Landmark!
The African American presence in the military over the years had a small beginning but the early “volunteers” didn’t let anything deter them. Their sacrifices made it possible for ALL to serve and be treated equally in the Armed Forces.

New Generation Of Fishers (of men)!

Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!"
Mat. 4:19
Last weekend my children entered a fishing tournament at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. We got up early that morning and packed up all of our fishing “stuff”, the poles, the bait, the tackle, the chairs, lunch, ds games etc. and headed out to catch us some fish. We had a great time!! We stayed there most of the day, the tourney started at 9am and ended at 3 but we left around 2, we were exhausted from the sun, plus the fish didn’t seem to be biting all that much. We got a few nibbles here and there and finally we got a few catches, but the catches didn’t come until near the end. I'm glad they hung there and decided to stay and fish longer instead of giving up!

It was a looong tiring day but the kids came back with the trophy for 1st and 2nd place (the boys). Alonis’s flounder didn’t register on the scale so it didn’t count, but she had fun anyway.






While watching my kids fish and watching my husband help them get their poles just right and the get the bait on and everything, I couldn’t help but think of the encounter that Simon and Peter had with Jesus in Matthew chapter 4. I thought to myself this day would be a perfect teaching tool to talk to my kids about “evangelism”. We talked about what it meant to become “fishers of men”, I told them that we don’t literally fish for people but some of the same methods for fishing can be applied to evangelizing and winning souls for the kingdom.
We first talked about “BAIT”. We talked about what it was, and what it’s used for in fishing (the shrimp or worm, used to lure the fish). We established that though we have a lot of different types of bait to choose from, when it comes to fishing for MEN , there can only be one kind of bait and that is the Word of God. The Word is food for the people, Jesus said He is the Bread of Life, so just like we offer bait to the fish, we are offering Christ to people.
We discussed how not all men will take or accept the bait. Just like fish some will swim right past and not even acknowledge it, while others will nibble at it but then decide not to take it all, BUT there will be some that will take hold and will be caught!! The men or women will accept Christ and want Him to be Lord over their life.
The most important lesson that we learned that day was that no matter what , “we must keep fishing”. We cannot give up when it seems like no one is biting! We must continue to try and reach men and women because eventually someone will catch on!! Hook Line Sinker!!!

Its Not All in Vain!!!

Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Whew....this is how I spent my Saturday!!! Yessss there were times I wanted to give up, I even thought about a relaxer and scissors but through it all I kept the faith knowing that my labor was not in vain. LOL...

Doing this hair is Process and a very tedious tedious journey!! For all those who are "Natural Headed"...lol like my daughter and I you know what I am talking about.

I would just like to share with you guys the 8hr process....lol..

Here are the products I am using at the moment...Pantene Relaxed and Natural for Women of Color Shampoo and Conditioner, Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler and ofcourse, my detangling comb and brush, and clips to keep the hair under control and sepereated, it doesnt like to play nice with other sections..lol

(step one: get yo supplies)

Here we are detangling in sections..yes sections. I told you the hair doesn't like to play nice with other sections they have to remain seperated...but seriously this will make the detangling process go faster.

I am detangling with a Goody brush that I loooove and with shampoo and kk (kinky kurly). Once I detangle it I take that section and break it down in two parts and make two twist and then put back in clip. Then I finish the other sections.

Once all the sections are done then I shampoo/condition hair regularly while hair is still in twist, I repeat while hair is STILL IN TWIST....this will keep hair from getting tangled again!!!! Important Step dont skip...

Hair is now put back in clips and ready to blow dry (*note: we dont use a lot of heat on our hair NO FLAT IRONS AT ALL, we air dry mainly but for mini twist I use blow dry to get it straighter and it last longer this way. I only do this (blow drying) every few months if that, maybe only twice a year).

Oh yea..another important step, make sure daughter has all her supplies...netflix, water bottle, snacks etc...or this will drive you crazy..I suggest watching the break up....boom boom..on the kick drum boom boom.loloolool....or Devil Wears Prada ...today we watched Hannah Montana...:(

And youuuuuuuuuur done!! Yay..this willl last a month if she doesnt get it wet and keep it oiled, moisturized and tied up.

The Former Things

Crying over spilled milk is not something that I often do, but today is an exception….This morning around 7am as I returned from my morning run, my loving, caring, adoring, clumsy and wonderful son Tyler comes to me and starts going on about how he was putting up dishes and blah blah blah (yes I tuned out for minute) and I broke your green bowl. I tune back in at “green bowl”, I say to the young fellow , “what green bowl”, he says, “you know, the green bowl”, at this point my heart begins to beat rapidly, and my mouth was getting all watery because I am literally, turning green, because I am about to be sick!! I rushed down stairs to find my lovely green bowl in green pieces. Ahh, I'm sick just thinking about it. I know you’re saying to yourself, “it’s a bowl, get over it”. Gasp, how dare you, say that about my bowl, it wasn’t just a bowl, it was MYYYYYYYY Bowl…ah ah…ok, I'm calm, so here is the story behind the bowl.











This bowl was passed down to me with a few other pieces (yes it was a “piece”) from my aunt who passed away about 11yrs ago. When I saw it I immediately fell in love with it!! Green is my favorite color and I love pretty dishes so hey it was perfect! Recently I decided that I REALLY liked the bowl so I decided to turn it over and see who makes it so I could see if they had other pieces, well to my surprise, the company who made it was Fire King and they produced glassware similar to Pyrex type dishes back in the 1940s (I’m sure my bowl was produced then:)). They no longer make these dishes, but can find them at antique shops, collector websites, eBay, and if you’re real lucky, you may be able to snag a couple pieces from the Goodwill, or a garage sale, but the point is, they are kind of hard to just come by.
I do have a couple of other pieces from Fire King, they are some little saucers, but none compare to my Jadeite Bowl…I recently saw on one of my favorite websites, The Pioneer Women, has a whole set of the Jadeite collections, I drooled looking at her pictures. I am now on a mission to get my own set, at a reasonable price and pace of course, but today, let’s all just take a moment of silence, for the one that was lost!!

While writing this blog, I am reminded of how wonderful our Father is, isn’t he just awesome!!! I mean just how he RESTORES his people. How he RESTORES us physically, mentally and emotionally!! How when we are BROKEN, in mind, in body and in spirit, he is right there ready, willing and able to heal and to RESTORE us back to our rightful position. Just like no temporary fix will do for me and this bowl (glue), there is no substitute for being restored back to the Father. Drugs, sex, alcohol, none of it can do what Christ can, sure, it may hold you up for a little while but at some point, that temporary glue will begin to erode, from all the things that have been bearing down on it, then next thing you know some things begin to seep through the cracks, and you’re no longer holding up! But it you go to CHRIST his fix won’t fail; you will be made WHOLE no flaws. No one will be able to see the cracks, the chips, scars, the bruises that you have suffered. He is the MASTER RESTORER!!

M.I.A


I know it’s been a while since my last post, but it has been CRAZY here. I have just been so exhausted. Here is a brief run down: The kids started school on Aug 11, I started school on Aug 18, my husband started taking classes and football season is in full swing..Whew. I got tired just typing it!! Things seemed to be going ok at first but it seemed like right when we got in the groove of things, other things just popped up. I was looking forward to Labor being a day of relaxation but even that got canceled when we took a 7hr road trip home to Texas because my husband’s truck needed an inspection sticker. Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to see and spend time with my family but I would have rather just chillaxed and stayed at home in my bed…umm, sounds good even now…J
Hopefully soon things will pan out and we will get in the groove, but I'm going to keep my out for any wrenches that are lurking in the shadows. J. It hasn’t been all bad though; here are a few pics of what we have been up too.

Where I spend most of my time and money!! Seriously, these books could pay rent on an apartment, or a car note plus insurance depending on the car...No exaggeration!!
This is all for now…I'm going to take a quick nap before I get the kids from school. I hope to be back on schedule and start posting once a week as planned. I think I should schedule a “Blog Day”, a day just to sit and read others blogs and update mine. We will see though…plans seem to have been changing a lot around here lately. Until then Be Blessed!

Back To School!!

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
This year my daughter went off to middle school and my sons started their 7th grade year. It seems like time is just passing by so fast. It seems like only yesterday they were all just in kindergarten or pre-k. I know most parents can’t seem to wait until summer is over and the kids are back in school, but I am the opposite. I love having my kids at home. I love the sounds of summer, the sounds of sibling rivalry, and the sounds of my own voice “ministering strongly” to them. LOL. Every year when I take them to school, I always shed a few tears…STILL. I thought in the beginning it was just something that I would grow out of as they got older, but the older they get the harder it is to see them go.


I enjoyed watching them grow and mature over the summer into wonderful, loving young people. This year, I just felt compelled to encourage them with a letter instead of just the usually weekly scripture, I wanted them to know how so in love we are with them and to encourage them to be their best :

Dear Taylor, Tyler and Alonis,
We just want you all to know that, this summer, like all other summers with you were amazing. We’ve enjoyed watching you play, laugh, love, argue, pray, worship, eat, and just all out live these last few months. We loved seeing the growth that has taken place right before our eyes both physically and spiritually in your lives.
This year like every other school year will come with its own challenges, but we want you to remember a few things:
1. You are an overcomer… challenges will arise but you have the power to overcome!
2. You don’t have to conform, YOU are the salt of the earth, and YOU are difference makers!!
3. Speak life over yourselves, over your teachers, and over your peers!!
4. Treat others like you would like to be treated!
5. Be respectful to those who have authority over you
6. We love you and we will always love you no matter what, we are here for you so don’t be afraid to come and talk to us about ANYTHING!

5K

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith

I have been training myself to run a 5k since March and the time has finally come. My husband ran with me at my pace so I am thankful to him for that...It was definitely an experience of a lifetime and I look forward to running another one soon. There is one coming up on Aug. 21 but I am not sure if I can handle this heat again. It was sooooo humid and sooooo hot, I got to the end and was throwing up...LOL, yes i got the full race experience...and I also ran a persoanl best time of : 30:33. I hope to next time to either match this time or beat it. Thanks to all the support from my family and friends that kept me motivated to run...

Fire Safety Training

This third I will bring into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.'" (Zechariah 13:9)
For as long as I can remember ever since my kids have been in school , they alway have a fire safety day. They pack a bunch of restless , noisy 4th graders into the gymnasium and proceed to tell them about the dangers of fire. They also talk to them about the importance of having a family meeting place to go to when there is a fire, and how to stop, drop, and roll.
When I told them about going to a fire safety demo, in our cul de sac, they just sort of rolled their eyes like , mom, please, dont make me go out in the heat for that..lol..needless to say, I told them they were going any way..lol. When we got there, they sort of stumbled over to the fire trucks, but once inside the camper they brought, they came out with a whole new attitude. Inside the camper was an actual smoke demonstration. It was setup like a little house with windows, door etc and the kids had to learn what to do in a fire. The firemen pressed a button and the camper filled with smoke, the kids tried to open the windows, the doors, nothing happened, they couldnt see a thing, they had to get on all fours and crawl out, OH how they enjoyed that. Then came the best part learning how to use a fire extinguisher!!!!
Here are the kids getting a lesson on what a fire extinguisher was, and how to use it. Always remember P.A.S.S (P-pull out the pin, A- aim, S- spray, S-sweeping motion)

1. What is something you wished you’d learned to do earlier in life?
To be consistent....lol.. and finish school. If I had that simple concept, I could be sitting back relaxing right, instead, i relaxed "earlier in life" lol and now play time is ova!!

2.What is your biggest pet peeve with the military?
My biggest issue with the miltary is how they are slow to pay you when they OWE you but when you owe them, they take it all at once and sometimes you dont even know you owe them until after they have docked your pay.! Maybe its only happened to us..:)

3.What tourist attraction near you have you never seen?
The French Quarter. We are stationed an hour from New Orleans, and we didnt even go to Mardi Gras or nothing, or participate in any of the Super Bowl festivities...we are so lame..lol

4.What are you avoiding doing right now?
Homework!!!

5.Wine, beer or liquor?
Neither, I dont drink.

Contentment

With the school year getting ready to start and parents hustling and bustling out to the nearest Wal-mart, Dollar Tree, or Office Depot, to get school supplies or to the local mall or a nearby outlet to get there kids all decked out for the "first day of school". I began to think on my own childhood and how when I was growing up, getting new supplies and clothes for school was a big deal. Most kids showed up to school with the lastest clothes, shoes, hairstyles, binders, pens, pencils etc. Kids stayed up putting their outfits together, laying them out on the bed and matching it with the latest shoes and acessories.
I wasnt as fortunate as many of the kids at my school, I grew up with three younger siblings and times were very hard for my family so new clothes was something we rarely got, and we only got the basic and i mean basic supplies for school meaning pencils and paper and maybe a folder. I think i may have had the same back pack all four years of highschool and No...it wasnt a JanSport like everyone elses. I soooo wanted the cool clothes, the Duck Head, Girbaud, Hilfiger, Polo, Guess, Nike, Cole Hann, and the list goes on and on but my wardrobe consisted of mostly of hand me downs and shoes from PayLess or WalMart that were noticebly knock off of the more popular versions...lol..I was mortified most of the time and was never satisfied with what I had. I knew my mom couldnt afford certain things, but it still didnt take away the taste of brand new and brand name things...
Somehow I think that , that discontent, carried over into adulthood and I found myself always wanting more, and then when God blessed me with more, I still wanted more. We got the degree, but now I need a better degree, then we got the promotion, but that still not enough...we just want more more more. Never Satisfied!! Then one day I realized that true contentment, cant come from man or material things it can only come from God. He is our father and everything we need can be found in HIM. We dont have to worry about the cares and burdens of this world we know that our God our Father, has our back. Just like he feeds the birds of the air and takes care of the lillies in the field, HE will take care of us.

Berry Goodness

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man

Yes Yes, the Lord is GOOD, and so are these "Mini Blueberry Cobblers" that I made using a recipe from The Pioneer Woman. Oh how I just adore the Pioneer Women and any other women for that matter who can come up with such tasty, tasty things. The Pioneer Woman and Paula Deen are two of my most favorite..lol..cooks in the world. These two women have BUTTER and they arent afraid to use it. Now take that all you cowardly low fat, low cal junkies. Thats right..my name is Kesha and I Love Butter!! There you have it straight from the horses mouth. I can longer hide this fact, besides, the effects of it uses can be seen on my "hips". LOL. Um Um ...ok Im back..I went to my happy place for a moment!

Smile....for a close up....ummm these little minis are begging for a scoop of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream (oooo Blue Bell.. in my Homer Simpson voice, tongue out and drooling, but thats another blog).

But for those of you who dont feel like clicking and want to get started now here is the recipe, but I must state that I am not liable for the licking of bowls and any extra workouts that may occur after making this recipe.

Ingredients
2 cups Self-rising Flour (You Must Use Self-rising) I only had all purpose but add baking soda and salt to make it self rising
2 cups Sugar
2 cups Milk
2 sticks Butter, Melted
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 cups Fresh Raspberries - substitute whatever fruit u have on hand, i had blueberries
Extra Sugar For Sprinkling
Preparation Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine flour with sugar, then whisk in milk. Whisk in melted butter and vanilla.
Pour 1/4 cup batter into greased muffin tins. Sprinkle a few raspberries on top.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until golden brown and crisp around the edges.
Invert onto a cooling rack and serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream
